The design requirements for chemistry laboratories rarely vary and yet this does not make a homogenous lack of design excusable. This brought about opportunities for the design team. The design team thus sought to address the monotony of long hours in the lab by introducing an element of fun into a space where science and discovery takes place.
Colourful graphics were added to the floor, marking out the circulation arteries as well as depicting chemical symbols from the periodic table as homage to the scientific study taking place within the space. The design of the graphic was driven by the concept of systemization and organization while bringing about optimism and vibrancy through colours. This usage of colours enables such learning environments to be incubators of innovation and creativity.
The lab benches were custom designed to fulfill the working and storage requirements of the lab. The aesthetics were also put into thought and in terms of ergonomics, the design prioritized on the users and the activities they were involved in. In this case, it was on research and lab work, and thus the details of the fixtures and furniture had to be sensitive to needs of the users; improving the work process within that environment.
